"He Comes to Us as One Unknown"
Wednesday, December 17
7:00 pm, Sanctuary
Dessert and fellowship following in the Fellowship Hall.
Come celebrate Christ’s coming as a baby, knowing that He will return again at some unknown time to call us all to a new Jerusalem. This is a time and place for reflection and to hear what God is calling us to be: neighbors, servants, witnesses, and people of God in love. As we carry our burdens in, let them be lifted from us as we travel back out into a sometimes dark and cold world, bringing light through Christ’s sacrifice and love divine.
The evening will feature biblical lessons, favorite Christmas carols, and music from:
We are so excited to invite Thom Gunther as our guest soloist. Baritone Thomas Gunther was most recently seen as Scarpia (Tocsca) and Marcello (La Boheme) with Soo Opera Theater and is preparing future performances of Schaunard with First Coast Opera and Amelia Island Opera. On the concert stage, he has been the soloist in Britten’s War Requiem, Faure’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and Handel’s Messiah. He’s sung opera and concert roles all over the world, including at Opera Theatre of St. Louis, the Des Moines Metro Opera, and with the Dominican Republic National Symphony. Gunther earned his degrees from Simpson College, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. He has also completed his doctoral coursework from the University of Kentucky. Gunther is currently on the voice faculty of the Omaha Conservatory of Music, the University of Nebraska, and Doane University.
A beloved Christmas Eve tradition, the Festival of Lessons and Carols sets a tone both contemplative and celebratory. Since 1918, it has been sung each year on Christmas Eve in the King’s College Chapel (Cambridge, England) by the King’s College Choir of Men and Boys. Our worship service at STLC follows the King’s College Chapel tradition, using biblical readings interspersed with carols and seasonal music.
Please join us! Bring friends and neighbors!
